Brian originally hails from Dartmouth Nova Scotia. He spent part of his early childhood exploring the woods and shorelines with his grandparents in the tiny fishing village of Freeport NS. His early years in these idyllic spaces instilled a deep love of the land and people of rural Canada. Surrounded by east coast music, Brian was inspired by these memories of the Nova Scotia lifestyle.
Brian took his first guitar lesson at age 10. He was smitten by the instrument. By the time he reached high school Brian was playing in bands and writing endless poems and songs, battling teenage angst through creativity. A summer in the Temagami ON wilderness changed his life forever, and he resolved to follow a Northern Ontario dream.
His chosen career of forestry landed Brian in Thunder Bay, ON where he met other creative musical folks at Lakehead University. These are friends with whom he still makes music to this day. In performing at many events and venues during university days, Brian began song writing in earnest, taking influences from Gordon Lightfoot, Bruce Cockburn, Stan Rogers and other Canadian folk heroes.
While working as a forester in the community of Red Rock ON, Brian became a founding Board member of the Live From the Rock Blues and Folk Society and, along with some like minded friends, founded the Live From The Rock Folk Festival in 2003, which continues to be a very popular summer music festival on the North Shore of Lake Superior.
Through his work with the Festival, Brian had a hand in helping many young and up-and-coming Canadian folk and roots musicians to get a start on the festival scene. Brian himself was also a featured and popular performer at several years of the Festival.
For over 10 years, Brian was a member of the popular Thunder Bay band The Knackers. He has performed at the Trout Forest Music Festival, Live from the Bedrock Festival, Algoma House and completed many solo and ensemble projects with other Thunder Bay musicians at songwriters’ circles and house concerts, further honing his craft. Brian continues to present and promote Canadian folk and roots music through his role as Board member and Director with the Sleeping Giant Folk Music Society based in Thunder Bay.
Brian’s first full-length album Follow These Tracks highlights his song-writing talent, and his love of a good story and melody, intertwined with the inspiring influence of wild and rural places in Canada.
Currently, Brian is trying to live by his own words: " ....and I resolve to stop wishing, to make the most of this ride....to follow these tracks and be satisfied"
His new album, Follow These Tracks is out now... available on all platforms and by mail order !
